Urbanlux Constructions transformed this character-filled C1905 sandstone villa at 43 Esmond Street, Hyde Park, preserving its period soul while reshaping it for the way families live today. Set on an 812sqm parcel in one of Adelaide’s most sought-after city-fringe pockets, the home is a study in how to let heritage features shine alongside contemporary comfort.
The original villa’s character was retained and restored throughout, from the tessellated tiles on the front verandah to the polished floorboards, hall arch, leadlight windows and ornate fireplaces. A brand new open-plan extension then opens the home right up, with 3.5-metre ceilings, Blackbutt hardwood floors and a light-filled living zone that flows to a tiled alfresco pavilion at the rear.
At its heart is a bespoke shaker-style kitchen with stone benchtops, marble splashbacks, a large butler’s pantry and quality appliances. New bathrooms, including an artisan-tiled master ensuite, bring the home fully up to date, while a complete re-plumb and re-wire means it now performs as well as it presents.
